1986 Montelena Estate Zinfandel

At Montelena we say that Zinfandel shows the unique characteristics of each vintage more clearly than any other varietal, manifested by changes in the aroma, flavors and body of the wine. The 1986 growing season was memorable for many reasons: the 100 year flood during February when the vines were dormant, an unusually warm spring, a cool summer and a very wet harvest.

vintage weather

Temperate Consistent. Heavy winter rains in February and March followed by a warm spring led to early bud-break. Growing season even longer than 1985. Wines rounder, softer than 1985; a few late season rains posed no major problems.

tasting notes

The cool and rainy ripening season has given us a lighter style wine than we receive from hotter years when there will be some raisined fruit and a bigger wine. The color is a bright ruby and the bouquet is dominated by the spicy and smokey characteristics of Zinfandel. On the palate radiant cherry flavors marry with the zinfandel spice. The lighter acid balance accentuates the zinfandel fruit flavors as opposed to a warmer year when one experiences a port-like richness.

Our philosophy of bringing the vineyard and the vintage to the glass is very clearly demonstrated by this lighter vintage Zinfandel. Enjoy…
