1984 Alexander Valley Chardonnay

The 1984 vintage finished early in the blazing heart of late August with the sudden ripening of the grapes which caused a frenzy of activity. Fortunately the high degree of maturity in the grapes has carried over as an intense fruitiness in the resulting wines which has only helped to emphasize the Chateau Montelena style, which prefers to concentrate on the varietal fruit rather than heavy oak flavors.

vintage weather

Hot. Very heavy late fall-early winter rains, but no late winter rains resulted in warm soils and early bud-break. Hot spring and summer, shortest growing season on record. Fruit very clean, big, with surprisingly good balance.

tasting notes

The 1984 "Alexander Valley' Chardonnay has a nice green-gold color and full bouquet that indicates a richness in the wine which is further enhanced by luscious tightly knit aromas of Chardonnay character; tropical fruity pineapple and coconut along with spicy green apple with a hint of vanilla from the French oak barrels. Finely structured, it has a clean balance and a mouth filling body although it may seem somewhat tart from its youthful acidity. All of these elements combine to make the wine tasty and smooth upon release but we can assure you that more time in the bottle will only serve to improve the wine.

The amiable nature and generosity of flavors make this wine a pleasant companion to a wide variety of foods ranging from simple fruits and cheeses to grilled fowl.
